Who is Allergen Bureau?

The Allergen Bureau is the peak industry body representing best practice in food industry allergen management. The Allergen Bureau draws on the latest science and regulatory information from around the world on food allergens, including emerging food allergens.

Their mission is to lead the global food industry in best practice allergen management, sharing information that builds trust and transparency that supports allergen sensitive consumers to make informed choices.

What is VITAL?

The Allergen Bureau Working Groups have developed a standardised allergen risk assessment process under the name Voluntary Incidental Trace Allergen Labelling Program also known as VITAL program.

Carrying out a VITAL risk assessment using the VITAL tools which includes VITAL Online, assists a food company to thoroughly review the allergen status of all the ingredients and the processing conditions that contribute towards the allergen status of the finished product.

The result of this assessment is a labelling outcome that summarises the food allergens that are likely to be present in food due to intentional inclusion as part of a recipe and via cross contact. The labelling outcome to this program produces a ‘contains’ statement and a ‘precautionary statement’ using the words ‘May be present’.

Please visit  Allergen Bureau website for further information on the benefits of implementing the VITAL program.
